Lonnie Dee Dorth, 82, Independence, MO, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2014 while in the care of The Groves Community Hospice at the Rosewood Care Center in Independence, MO. While in hospice care, he was honored with a short service conducted by a representative from the VFW for having served his country so valiantly.

Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Guinnie and George; his twin brother, Donnie Lee; his beloved daughters Denise Burkhart and Brenda Powers; two half-brothers, a half-sister, and a great-granddaughter.

He is survived by his caring wife of 60 years, Margie; grandson Stephen Powers and his wife Tamla; four great grandchildren and one great, great-granddaughter. brother Phil Dorth and wife Ginny; nephews, Steven and David Dorth; half-sister, Irene LeRoy; Lonnie was born in Rolla, KS on October 26, 1931.

He and his family moved to Fair Play, MO in 1950. Lonnie entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War till his discharge in 1953. He continued in the Reserves until 1959. Lonnie settled in the Kansas City and Independence, area after the war. Lonnie was a member of the Fair Play United Methodist Church was employed as a machinist at AT&T for 36 years before retiring in 1993.

Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO 64055. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Lindley Prairie Cemetery near Bear Creek, MO with Military Honors.
