John was a Navajo Code Talker during World War II. After training at Field Signal Battalion, Training Center, Camp Joseph H. Pendleton, Oceanside, California; he served with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division. He was wounded in action. His mother was identified as Mary Doolie of Two Wells, Gallup, New Mexico. John had re-enlisted on 4 Nov 1947, almost two months before he passed away. On 23 Jan 1948 he was interred in the Golden Gate National Cemetery.

Identified siblings were Minnie Doolie, Irene Arthur, Sam Joe Arthur, Bessie Arthur, Helen Arthur, and Elcie Arthur (1940 Census).
