ANDREW JOSEPH DONAHUE, of COLTS NECK, died Sunday, April 2, at Care One, Holmdel. He was born in the Vailsburg section of Newark where he lived until moving to Colts Neck in 1973. He was Deputy Fire Chief of the Third Division in the city of Newark for 35 years, retiring in November 1979. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, New Jersey Exempt Firemens Association and New Jersey State Retired Policemen and Firemens Association, Inc. Local 8 of Ocean County. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Seventh Infantry Division from 1942 to 1944. He was honorably discharged a second lieutenant and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel USAR. He was the commanding officer of the 24th Military Intelligence Battalion (Aerial Reconnaisance and Security) (Field Artillery) headquartered at Miller Air Field, New York. After 25 years of active and reserve service, he retired in 1967. He was a member of the New Jersey Chapter of Military Officers Association and a life member of the National MOAA. He was a life member of The Reserve Officers Association of the United States. He was a member of Fort Monmouth Officers Club and Sun Eagles Golf Club at Fort Monmouth. He attended Pace Institute, Rutgers University, earned his associates degree from Brookdale Community College and graduated from Thomas Edison State College with a bachelor of arts degree. He attended Monmouth University during his retirement. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck, and a member of the Mens Morning Office at St. Marys Parish. He was a gentleman with dignity much present and will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends.
He was the son of the late Patrick and Agnes Donahue and was predeceased by his five sisters, Agnes Schwankert, Jane Spiessbach, Mae Van Nest, Anne Kehrle, and Theresa Donahue; two brothers, James P. Donohue and John Donahue; and a nephew, Robert Schwankert. Surviving are his beloved wife of 48 years, Lottie Czerniewska Donahue; five nephews, Michael Spiessbach, Andrew Spiessbach, Paul Spiessbach, Eugene Kehrle, and Andrew Kehrle; a niece, Theresa Price; two sisters-in-law, Irene Martin and Jean Schwankert; and a brother-in-law, Thaddeus "Ted" Czerniewski.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. The funeral will be at 8 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home followed by a 9 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Marys R.C. Church, Colts Neck. Interment will be in Brig. Gen. William C.
