After attending the common schools of Bath County he attended the Kentucky Wesleyan Collage at Winchester from 1896 to 1900 and thereafter read law under Judge William M. Buckner, a distinguished Kentucky lawyer of his day. In 1903 he was admitted to the bar of Bath County.
From 1901 to 1912 he served as Master of Commissioner of the Bath Circuit Court. In November 1912 he was elected County Attorney of Bath County and served thereafter continuously in that office until the first Monday in January 1934, except for a period of service in the United States Navy during World War I from which he was honorably discharged on December 23rd, 1918. He was a charter member of Bath Post No. 42, American Legion, and was elected its first Commander.
He was appointed as City Attorney of Owingsville in 1938 and served a four year term and again served in that capacity from 1944 to 1948. He also served as a member of the Owingsville City School Board and as a member of the Bath County Board of Education. On January 8th, 1919, he was married to Elizabeth Salyer and to them two children were born, Mrs. Sherman Goodpaster, Jr. and Mr. D. W. Doggett, Jr.
Endowed with a high sense of honesty and integrity and a spirit of friendliness, he served his community well, leaving behind a host of admiring friends at the time of his death which occurred January 3rd, 1949.
