PEORIA, IL - Mary Alice (Dodds) Bale, 90, of Auburn, IL, the mother of a Peoria woman, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 14, 1918, in rural Auburn to John Emerson and Elizabeth Corrington Dodds. Mary Alice married George Evan Bale on Nov. 7, 1942, in Springfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Dodds; and brother, John E. Dodds.
George survives his wife, as does a daughter, Dorothy Ann Maloney of Peoria; and son, George Evan Bale of Springfield; grandchildren, Pam (husband, Joe) Alwan of Peoria, Cindy (husband, John) Morris of Peoria, and Tom (wife, Erin) Maloney of Peoria; and great-grandchildren, Mason Alwan, Caitlin Alwan, Matt Alwan, Jordan Morris, Taylor Morris, Merrick Maloney and Aidan Maloney.
Mrs. Bale graduated from Illinois State University and first taught in a one-room school house near Glenarm. She was a substitute teacher for Ball Chatham School District for many years.
She was a self-taught artist who exhibited at the Old State Capitol Art Fair, Peoria Art Guild, Lakeview Museum and Junction City Art Fair in Peoria.
She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield.
Her family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of her funeral at 11 a.m. today, April 14, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 201 S. Main, Route 4, Chatham. The Rev. Mark Merrill will officiate. Burial will be in Sugar Creek (Cumberland) Cemetery near Glenarm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church or Memorial Medical Center Home Hospice.
