Alan was born at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa, at 5:15 a.m. on October 5, 1931, weighing in at 7 lbs., 13-1/4 ozs. Dr. William Hamilton was the attending physician. The second child of Otis Allan and Charlotte Ann (Petermeier) Dodd, Alan was raised and educated in rural Baxter and graduated from Rhodes High School class of 1950. He was a member of the high school boys' quartet whose members were Norman Cheville, Phil Nichols, Leon Wiltsey and Alan.

Alan worked briefly at a washing machine manufacturer in Newton, Iowa, and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951. He married Juanita Elaine Gallentine on July 18, 1953, at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown.

Following an honorable discharge with the rank of staff sergeant in 1954, Alan and Juanita lived on his parent's farm near Parkersburg for a year and made improvements to the property. After that Alan was employed by Fisher Controls and Jack Arney's Mobile station.

In 1963 he purchased Shaver Apco on Highway 14 north of Marshalltown and changed the name to Dodd's Service. A short time later he also purchased a small garbage business, E-Z Sanitation, and in 1967 moved exclusively to the sanitation business following the relocation of the highway. In the sanitation business Alan and Juanita brought new ideas to Marshalltown with the addition of commercial containers, the first recycling center, and the first roll-off company.

He was a member of the Central Christian Church where he served as a deacon, an elder, and board chairman; Marshalltown (Noon) Kiwanis where he served as President, Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis District Lt.
