Birth: 1845
Green County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Sep. 13, 1911
Orting
Pierce County
Washington, USA

Augustus was born into slavery to Nick and Susan Arrington.

When the Civil War broke out, he was taken into the war as a body servant by his owner, Edward Arrington. During the war, Augustus got away from his owner and was found by Captain Burnett and transported to Iowa. It was in Iowa that Augustus join the Union Army. He enlisted in 1865 and mustered out in 1866. He returned to Iowa for 2 years before doing some extensive travel throughout Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado and Yakima before ending up in Pierce County. While in Yakima, he ran into one of his fellow soldiers, William C. Phillips. In addition, he was introduced to Jasper and Belle Evans, Alfred Hawkins, Spencer Jackson and Columbus Hollins - all former Civil War soldiers. (Source: Civil War Pension files of the named soldiers.)

For a while, Augustus used his middle name as his surname. He married under the name "May" to Lizzie Todd and had two children, George and Isaac. Isaac died in childhood but George lived to adulthood. He married Nora Caraway and together they had one child, Herman Bennett May. Herman was born in 1901 in Oklahoma and died in California in 1969, having not married nor children. (Source: Genealogical research done by me.)
