Monsignor Frank Dirksen, 85, of Springfield died at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1908, in Springfield, the son of Frank T. and Mary Cloney Dirksen. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Dirksen, and sister, Mary Maloney.
Monsignor Dirksen attended Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis and was ordained in 1948 by Bishop James Griffin. He earned a master's degree in hospital administration at St. Louis University. He served as assistant pastor at St. Boniface in Quincy, St. Mark in Venice and Cathedral in Springfield and as pastor at the former St. Catherine Parish in Virden and St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Springfield.
He was named a prelate of honor of his holiness the pope in 1966. His diocesan duties were as director of hospitals, director of the Council of Nurses, director of insurance, secretary of the Secular Priest Trust Fund, director of cemeteries, administrator and chaplain of Pope John Paul I apartments in Springfield, administrator of Marian Heights apartments in Alton, secretary and treasurer of Catholic Care Center Inc., diocesan spiritual director of The Legion of Mary, director of Purgatorial Society and bishop's designate for retired priests. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 364 and Biship Griffin Assembly, fourth degree Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are four nephews and a niece, Sister Francis Mary, OP, of Springfield.
Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Daniel Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
