TO BURY HERO AT FIFE LAKE
The body of S/Sgt. DeVere W. Dine, who was killed in action December 23, 1944, in Belgium, will arrive in Fife Lake by train Saturday afternoon and will be taken to the Springfield township cemetery, where graveside services will be held at 2:30. The American Legion Post No. 316 of Fife Lake will have charge and Rev. Leon May of Alma will officiate.
S/Sgt. Dine was born October 16, 1920, in Springfield township and was a graduate of the class of 1939 of the Fife Lake high school. He enlisted in the army in 1943 and was assigned to the Tenth Armored Division in General Patton's Third Army. He received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. His citation reads "For gallantry in action at Bastogne, Belgium, drawing intense hostile artillery and mortar fire, S/Sgt Dine assisted in repelling a determined enemy infiltration attempt, suffering mortal wounds during the couse of action."
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Bertha Ouderkirk of Vicksburg; three brothers, Edward Dine of Grandville, Norval Dine of Fife Lake, and Wilbur Dine, who is with the Army Air Forces in Texas; two sisters, Louise and Rosemary Ouderkirk of Vicksburg, and many other relatives and a host of friends. S/Sgt Dine's father preceded him in death in 1929.
