Birch Vernon Dimmitt was born March 15, 1886 and Jessie Leah Pratt born May 24, 1894 both near Colby, Kansas.Their parents were early pioneers of Thomas County, Kansas. They attended the Colby Schools and both graduated from Colby High School then called Thomas County High School. Vern 1906 and Jessie in 1911.
Vern was a good athlete and loved to play football and baseball. He also taught 2 terms in rural schools. He worked in the Boerner and Troutfetter General Merchandise Store and sometimes in the summer worked in the harvest fields. Later he acquired an interest in a grocery store in Wabaunsee and they went there to live when married April 22, 1916. But both were homesick for the plains and came back to Colby after a few months. Vern and Authur Larson bought a general merchandise store and later Mr. Larson sold his interest to Jessie's brother Sam and it was known as the Dimmitt and Pratt Store. Vern was a member of the City Council when the City became a taxless town a distinction it held for several years. After a few years the store was sold and Vern went to work for the city as Cemetery Supt. of Beulah Cemetery.
Vern and Jessie had 2 children, Ethelyn and Lloyd. Both graduated from the Colby HS.
After Vern retired he became interested in several hobbies. He made dozens of birds out of gourds and did some painting but his main interest was in the Thomas County Historical Society which both he and Jessie helped establish. He had a wonderful memory and wrote many stories of early Thomas County and Colby history. He spent many hours in the office of the Historical Society looking up things and reading the old Thomas County Papers on the Microfilm Reader. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary April 22, 1977 with an open house and many of their relatives and friends attended. Vern died June 8, 1977 and is buried in the Beulah Cemetery.
Ethelyn got her degree from Park College, Parkville, MO and Lloyd graduated from the Barnes Business College in Denver, CO. After graduating Ethelyn taught 3 terms of school in the Page City Schools. Lloyd unable to get into the service in WWII went to San Diego where he worked in an airplane factory for 2 years returning to work in the Post Office when many of the Postal employees were called to the service. On November 24, 1944 he lost his life in a freak blizzard that comes up quickly on the plains, when he substituted for a rural carrier, that day. Ethelyn married Marshall Dutton from Smith county, May 31, 1941.
Jessie, after the children were grown took the position as Librarian of the Colby City Library, a job she held for over 30 years, excepting for 4 years which she spent as High School Librarian.
Marshall and Ethelyn lived in Colby until 1970 when they moved to Lawrence, Kansas. They have 6 children, five girls and 1 boy. All graduated from Colby except for their son, Bil who graduated from Lawrence High School.
