Funeral Services for Lillian G. Ashley will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Ragan, Nebraska on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Virginia Fleharty officiating. Private family interment will be held prior to services in the Freewater Cemetery in rural Harlan County, Nebraska.
Lillian Grace Ashley, 98 years of age, of Ragan, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society – Colonial Villa at Alma, Nebraska. Lillian was born July 22, 1915 in Cambridge, Nebraska, the fourth of five children born to John C. and Louise A. (Kuhlman) Dietz. When she was a child, her family moved to a farm near Orleans, Nebraska.
On September 18, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lyle Ashley in Stockton, Kansas and to this union three daughters were born: Diana, and twins, Marlene and Darlene. The family made their home on the family farm west of Ragan, Nebraska where they engaged in farming and raising cattle. In 1966, they moved east of Ragan where they continued the farming operation. Lillian was preceded in death by Lyle, in 2005.
Lillian was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Ragan where she taught Sunday school and Bible School for many years. She was a member of the WSCS which later became the UMW. In 2011, she was honored for being a member of the United Methodist Church for 84 years. Lillian was also a member of the Hub Bub Club and was a leader for the Kittie Klover 4-H Club. She enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques and sewing. Lillian loved living on the farm and had a special place in her heart for her flower garden.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Walter Holtrof; brother, William Dietz; and two sisters: Agnes Schmalken and Doris Grove.
Lillian leaves to mourn her passing her three daughters: Diana Eckhardt and her husband, Kent of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Marlene Holtorf of Ragan, Nebraska, and Darlene Fischer and her husband, Allan of Trenton, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Brad and Diane Eckhardt of Sterling, Nebraska, Jeff and JoAnna Eckhardt of St. Joseph, Missouri, Amanda and Trevor Nutter of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jason and Sandy Holtorf of Papillion, Darin Fischer of Minden, Nebraska and Kaylea and Kirk Goldfish of Bertrand, Nebraska; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine Miller of Oxford, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
