Mary's family worked hard, starting first as farm workers and later owning their own orchards. Mary loved to sing and was part of the high school choir.
She had a lovely voice and a talent for harmonizing. Mary met her husband, Herb Diede, while they were students at Wenatchee High School. During high school, she worked at Skookum, packing cherries during the summer with her friends. After graduation, Mary attended beautician school, later earning her license. After dating for three years, Mary and Herb were married September 6, 1958. They made their first home in Seattle, where Herb was working for Boeing. From there, they moved to Kirkland and were living there when their son, Herb, was born. The family then moved to Bellevue, where their daughter, Pam, was born. Mary was a devoted wife and mother, dedicating her time and energy to keeping up with her children's activities, while maintaining a warm and welcoming home for the family. The family finally settled in Oregon City, OR, when Herb starting working for the Pear Bureau. Mary became involved in the community, working at the school, at the elections office, with senior citizens groups, as well as at her church, the Oregon City Church of Christ Christian. Mary accompanied her husband on many trips around the world, gaining an appreciation for different view points and lifestyles. Mary grew to love traveling and was enriched by her many experiences, developing lifelong friendships with people around the world. After Herb's retirement in 2001, the Diedes became snow birds, spending equal time in Chandler, AZ and Oregon City. Summers were spent camping and Mary's fondest memories were of camping trips with her grandchildren. Mary will be remembered for her warm and gentle personality, her artistic and creative sense of design and her total devotion to her family. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Cap and Nora Smart. Mary is survived by her husband, Herb; her son, Herb Diede of Wenatchee; and daughter, Pamela Dennison of Sherwood, OR; four grandchildren, Joshua Diede, Nickolas Diede, Megan Dennison and Austen Dennison. Mary is also survived by her brother, Larry Smart; and two sisters, Lorna Hendricks and Shirley Barker. Services Celebrating Mary's Life will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007, 11:00 a.m., at the Hillside Chapel in Oregon City, OR.
