Darlene was a retired educator. Over a 28-year career she worked with students of all ages, from preschool to university levels. A graduate of Dora High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics and a master's in elementary education from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
She was a classroom teacher in public and private schools in Melrose, Albuquerque and Floyd, N.M., and Slaton, Texas. She taught classes in entrepreneurship, parenting, clothing construction and interior design as an instructor at ENMU. She and her husband, Larry, earned certification as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and served on ambulance crews in Slaton.
Curry County was Darlene's classroom from 1990 to 1999. As a home economist with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service, she worked with 4-H and adult groups, leading educational workshops and coaching winning 4-H teams in horticulture and home economics. She received the Governor's Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women in 1993.
In 1999, Darlene became a state 4-H specialist based in Las Cruces, the position she retired from in 2002.
Darlene was married to Larry Dickson on Aug. 8, 1977, at the First Baptist Church in Portales. She and Larry were active in First Baptist Church of Las Cruces and community groups. For three years, they cared for toddlers together during church services. Darlene volunteered with a weekly sewing class for English language learners and sang in the Living Christmas Tree production. She hoped to start a ministry for military families inspired by her son, Aaron, an Army captain deployed to Afghanistan.
She and Larry enjoyed traveling together, recently visiting Alaska and Great Britain. They made frequent visits to Portales to see Darlene's mom, Zell Chapman Taylor, their daughter, D'Lyn, and granddaughter, Danielle.
Darlene was preceded in death by her father, Allen, in 1996, and her brother, Don, in 2008. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Zell Chapman Taylor and G.L. Taylor, of Portales; husband, Larry, of the home in Las Cruces; daughter, D'Lyn and granddaughter, Danielle, of Portales; son, Aaron and daughter-in-law, Dani, of Fayetteville, N.C.; and nieces Julie Walker and family, of Monument, Colo., and Sharon Riddle and family, of Longmont, Colo.
