Achilles W. Dicks was the oldest son of Nathan and Eleanor (Leonard) Dicks of Guilford Co., North Carolina.

Achilles married Sarah Ann Frost on November 27, 1845 in Clark Co., Illinois. They were the parents of at least eleven children: Eleanor, William, John Leander, Jane, Martin Henry, Peter Elwood, James, Elizabeth, Joseph F., Rosa and Alfred Haynes.

Achilles most likely migrated to Illinois between 1833 and 1844. In 1833, Achilles was the lead petitioner in the court documents regarding the dispersal of his father's will and his mother's rights to her dower. By 1844, however, Achilles' younger brother Cornelius was appointed guardian to their youngest siblings: Rachel, Mary and Lydia.
