Leslie, the son of Leslie A. Dickinson Sr. and Dorothy L. Dickinson and brother of Shasta of Patten ME enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 2, 1967 in Quantico VA. He graduated from Basic School on November 1, 1967 and was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant. Arriving in Vietnam on December 17 he was assigned for duty as the 2d Platoon Commander with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On January 30 a reaction force responded to an attack on a sweep team in on Highway 1 midway to the Hai Van Pass in Hoa Vang District of Quang Nam Province. A civilian bus had been destroyed by several command detonated devices triggered by the VC and the Marines team were under attack. Supporting fire was brought to bear, and the attackers were pursued into the thick undergrowth surrounding the road. Three of the attackers were killed and two taken prisoner, a further sweep of the area resulted in five Marines being wounded including 2dLt Dickinson by another command detonated device, all were evacuated for medical treatment.

On February 3, 2dLt Dickinson died onboard the AH-16 USS Repose as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds he had sustained from shrapnel.
