| Birth: | Jan. 6, 1837 | | Death: | Jul. 20, 1896 | The inscription reads : '"I am the Resurrection and the Life saith the Lord." Charles Dickens the Younger. Eldest son of Charles Dickens. Bessie Dickens, born June 15th. 1840, died April 18th. 1907, aged 66 years.' Charles Culliford Boz Dickens (to give him his full name, although he was always known as Charley) married Bessie Evans in November 1861. The father of the bride was a partner in Bradbury and Evans, who had been Dickens's publishers for a while and with whom the novelist had had disagreements. Charley went into a career in business and banking, but was declared bankrupt in 1868 ; following which, his father gave him a job on the magazine "All the Year Round". After the death of his father in 1870, Charley bought Gad's Hill Place, Dickens's house near Rochester, but was forced to give it up because of his own failing health. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
