Our beloved Mimi, MILDRED RUTH AKERS, went to be with the Lord November 11, 2009. She was born in Carrizo Springs, TX, August 7, 1930 to Robert and Tennie Dickens. Mimi grew up and spent a great deal of her life in south Texas and graduated from Mirando City High School in 1949. She was head cheerleader and always there to cheer on her sweetheart Don "Papa" Akers. Mildred married the love of her life, Don, in 1950 and they began their life together. She raised two children, Steve and Diana, and was always involved with the local Baptist church and the kids schooling. After retirement Mimi and Papa enjoyed extensive international traveling and being there to cheer on the grandkids at all their various school activities. She found great pleasure in working her crossword puzzles, checking out the latest fashions, cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and watching her favorite judges on television. Mimi was a loving and caring person who always put her family first. She was very proud of her four grandchildren all graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Don Akers; her son, Steve Akers and wife Sue; her daughter, Diana Stachowiak and husband Michael. She will be greatly missed by her 4 grandchildren Tom Akers and wife Shelley, Katie Wylie and husband Ben, Amy Akers and Erika Stachowiak and her soon to be great-grandchild due in May 2010. Mildred is also survived by her 3 brothers Robert Dickens and wife Joy, Melvin Dickens and wife Mary Ruth, and Pete Dickens and wife Nadine and numerous nieces and nephews. We all love you Mimi! You were our rock all these years. You will be greatly missed but always in our hearts! Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM Saturday November 14, 2009 in the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77079. Interment will follow in the Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in Mildred's name to the American Stroke Association 7272 Greenville Avenue Dallas, Texas 75231.
