Albert William Dick, 92, of Sterling, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Sterling. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 7, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 am. on Monday, March 10, 2003 at First English Lutheran Church with Rev. Andrew Dimit officiating. Burial services will follow at Riverside Cemetery with military rites by V.F.W Post No. 3541.
He was born Dec. 24, 1910, in Sterling, to Jacob and Emilie (Fritzler) Dick. On Feb. 10, 1952, he married Wilma Deinert Meloney in Sterling.
A much loved man with much love to give, Albert raised Wilma's two daughters, Clara and Velda, as his own.
Mr. Dick was raised and attended public school in Padroni. He then went into farming with his father.
In March, 1942, he was drafted into the Army. He received military training in Texas prior to being shipped to Europe. In Europe, along with typical frontline duty he was a truck driver and mechanic. His unit, the 90th Infantry Division, 344th Artillery Battalion, landed on Utah Beach the day after D Day. From Normandy, his unit would see action in campaigns that included Northern France, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes. He returned home after the Germans surrendered. He received numerous decorations and awards for his service and was honorably discharged in Oct. 1945.
Mr. Dick returned to farming after his discharge. In 1960, he started work at Logan County Hospital and continued there for almost 20 years. He then worked at the Logan County landfill for nine years. He enjoyed work and continued to stay active at various jobs, including the operation of a lawn service.
Mr. Dick's hobbies included work, gardening, fishing, and visiting with friends and relatives.
A member of the Lutheran Church, he loved the Lord, and his values were a positive example to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Clara (Clayton)Wambsganss, Sterling, and Velda (Loyd) Griggs, Greeley;sisters, Edna Schepler, Hot Springs, S.D., Helene (Leon)Wilcox, Strothmore, Calif.,Alvira Bowman, Las Vegas, Nev.,Evelyn cooper, Northglenn;brother Shelton Brooks, NewYork City; grandchildren,Crystal (Alan) Ullrich,
Hemingford, Neb., Camala(Alan) Crouch, Denver, Rhonda(Gregory) Anderson, Virginia
Beach, Va., Jamie (Timothy)Pribble, Greeley, Kelli Smith,Walla Walla, Wash., and Nicole(Mark) Gibson, Spokane, Wash.;great-grandchildren, Ceyonne(Steven) LeDesma, Rachel(Scott) Krul, Jennifer and Jonathan Anderson, D.J. and Derek Anderson, Taylor and Timmy Pribble, Kylan Sewell,Kody and Kasey Smith, andKarlee and Kobe Gibson; great-great-grandchildren, Isabella Nicole LeDesma, Jacob Scott Krul, William Pierce LeDesma;and numerous nieces and nephews.Mr Dick was preceded in death by his father, Jacob, mother, Emilie (Fritzler); step mothers, Amelia Munke and Wanda Brooks; sister Henrietta Ruf; and brothers, Paul, Henry Elmer and Emil.
