Selma Diamond
Birth: Aug. 5, 1920
Death: May 14, 1985

Actress. Born in London, Ontario, Canada, she grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from New York University while supporting herself selling stories and cartoons to the New Yorker Magazine. She broke into radio as a writer for NBC’s "The Big Show". She then landed a job with Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows”. Her movie debut was a voice only role in Stanley Kramer’s "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" which showcased her distinctive nasal rasp. She would actually appear in several more movies in her career including "Bang the Drum Slowly” in 1973, “My Favorite Year” in 1982, “Twilight Zone: The Movie” in 1983, and "All of Me" in 1984. Her best remembered role, however, is probably Selma Hacker the bailiff in TV’s “Night Court.” Diamond died from lung cancer while “Night Court” was still in production. The episode entitled “Hello, Goodbye” was dedicated to her memory. (bio by: Iola)
