Renee Lee Amitin (84) died late Sunday evening from complications of bronchitis. She resided at 11035 Langmuir Avenue in the Sunland neighborhood of Los Angeles, California at the time of her death.
Born in Perham, Minnesota on December 31, 1923 to Abraham and Gertrude Diamond, she was raised there in the frigid winters, but believed firmly that the love of family was more than enough to keep her warm. During World War II, she joined a mailing service with her synagogue that sent letters to Jewish soldiers.
She met her husband, Cy Amitin, who was serving in the Pacific Theater, through letter correspondence. They married on April 14, 1947 and moved to Sunland, California where they had three sons, Alan, 61, Michael, 57, and Billy, who passed away in 1994 at the age of 38.
She spent the next 61 years as a loving matriarch, supporting her family and playing an active role in the lives of her grandchildren. It rained the night she passed and it was no surprise to anyone who knew her that the world got a little colder when she left.
She is survived by her sons, Alan and Michael; two sisters, Bernice Blazer and Annetta Winnick; and eight grandchildren, Aaron, Emily, Seth, Ian, Jordan, Myles, Ava, and Raphael. Published in the Los Angeles Times on 12/18/2008.
