Arlene Bratlien, 65, passed away Friday morning at College Station Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday July 11, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station with The Rev. Joe Contreras officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery of College Station. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
Arlene was born May 20, 1946 in Waxahachie, Texas, the daughter of Willis L. and Mary Ruth (Goodwin) Dewey. Arlene's love of music began at an early age; she played the trombone in junior high and high school. She continued playing while attending college traveling with the Concert Band and with Living Sight and Sound. She graduated with a Bachelors of Music Education degree from Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.
She and Maynard met in the fall of 1968, in Nebraska where Maynard was the principal and Arlene was employed as the music teacher. They married that same year on December 24. They moved to College Station in August of 1980. Arlene was hired by College Station I.S.D. where she taught music at Oakwood Middle School from 1981-82. Southwood Valley Elementary School opened in the fall of 1983 and Arlene continued her music-teaching career here until her retirement in 2001. She was a member of the Texas Music Educators Association.
Arlene is preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Loren Dewey.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Maynard Bratlien of College Station; sons and daughter-in-law, Marcus and Carolina Bratlien and Christopher Bratlien, all of College Station; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joy and Joe Contreras of Clark, NJ., and Rod and Melody Clairmont of Pampa; and mother-in-law, Alma J. Bratlien of College Station.
