Dr. Juliette Chambers Devin (Jan. 28, 1897 - Feb. 2, 1965)
Professor of English, Drake University (1929-1962)
Daughter of James C. and Rose C. Devin

Juliette Chambers Devin was born in Paris, France on Jan. 28, 1897. She and her sister Yvonne (1895-1929) immigrated in 1899, adopted by James C. and Rose C. Devin, who lived in Ottumwa, Iowa and owned Roseland Fuel. She mentions in the Drake University Speaker's brochure that her father was a student of Euporean Literature, who apparently influenced her love of Literature. He was the son of James D. Devin, attorney, and the grandson of Thomas Devin, a founder of Ottumwa.

Juliette received her BA degree from Drake University in 1918 and taught at various high schools from 1918-1928, including Waterloo. She worked at Des Moines Register & Tribune for one year and then was hired at Drake University to teach English literature, after receiving her Master's Degree. Her thesis is entitled, "Nature in the 19th Century Russian Novel." She earned her PHD at University of Iowa in 1944 with the thesis, "Relation of George Meredith to Scientific Thought of His Age." Her special interests included:
Nineteenth Century Literature, Research and Kephart Writing, Post-Impressionist Art, and Contemporary European Literature of her day.

Professor Devin was an active member of Phi Beta Kappa, serving as chapter president at Drake University. She was also a member of the Professional Women's League, serving as Program Chairman in 1950, and she was President of Drake Alumnae for two years, and a member of American Association of University Professors. On her 1947 biography sheet she listed her college activities as : "Staff Committee Meetings!"

Dr. Devin retired from Drake University in 1962 and retired to Santa Barbara, California, where she passed away at her home on Feb. 1, 1965. Having already lost her father and sister, she was survived by her mother, Rose Chambers Devin, and was buried at the Devin family plot in Ottumwa Cemetery of Iowa.

{Transcriber note} The Devin family lived two doors down from my great Grandmother Mary Burns Lanigan.

No dates are on her stone; daughter of Rose C. Devin.
