Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Sergeant in the Union Army in Company H, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters. He was a prisioner of war. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 30, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads "Being on old artillerist, De Puy aided Gen. Bartlett in working the guns of the dismantled fort."
