Virginia was born on September 14, 1921, near Brooklyn, Iowa, the only child of Theodore and Bernice Brush Kann. She graduated from Brooklyn High School and later moved to Grinnell with her parents. On January 26, 1947, she was married to Albert R. Deppe, who was raising three young sons of his own on the family farm in the Rock Creek neighborhood west of Grinnell. Virginia quickly became mother and a hard-working partner on their farm. She raised sheep and tended a large flower and vegetable garden, feeding many members of the growing family. During this time she was also active in the Jasper Co. Farm Bureau, 4-H leadership, Victor Grange and St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Kellogg.
In later years, she joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell and was a member of the Mary Martha Circle. She enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, traveling and testing recipes from the Food Network. Virginia generously shared her gifts of cooking and sewing with friends, family and those in need.
Survivors include her children, Laird (Marilyn) Deppe of Kellogg, Charles (Sandra) Deppe of Jewell, Linda (Charles) Lester of Grinnell, Ronald (Cindy) Deppe of Grinnell, Patricia (Wayne) Skelton of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Luevena Deppe of Bandera, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one son, Jerry Deppe.
