Chlora Davis , b 1843 in Fairfax Co, VA, to Elias and Mary Ann Devers Davis. In 1860 she married Colville (or Colbert) Jamesson, son of Malcolm & Julia Jamesson of Centreville, VA (they owned the historic Mt Gilead homeplace). Colville moved to Washington, DC, and joined the Union Army. They were married 10 years and had 5 children when he died in 1870. Widow Chlora took several, but not all of her children, to live with her father, Elias Davis, at the home of her brother William Davis. Her youngest child, Genevieve “Jennie” Penelope Jamesson, born the same year Colville died in 1870, was apparently sent to a children’s asylum in DC, as there’s a listing for “Junnie Jamesson” at a home with a dozen girls several years later. “Junnie” is thought to be “Jennie”, the “e” being mistaken for a “u” in the cursive entry. Jennie went on to marry Charles Lloyd Wood and in later life dropped “Jennie” for “Pen” (middle name was Penelope).
Another daughter by Chlora’s marriage to Colville Jamesson was Lillie Venetti (married Clement O Pierce after the death of her first husband Francis Ferry). Lillie had 15 children, the oldest was a daughter with Francis Ferry.

In 1872, Chlora married George Walter DeMent. He was residing in Washington, DC, though he was born in St Mary’s Co, MD, where the French DeMent family had settled. Chlora and George DeMent had 5 children: Paul Edward, Cornelius Walter, Grace Elizabeth, Franklin, and Maud Evelyn. Franklin became a wife beater in his early twenties, featured on the front page of the newspaper. He was eventually committed to St Elizabeth’s Hospital for the insane in DC.

Chlora died in 1895 at age 50 of early-onset uterine cancer. She is buried at Glenwood Cemetery in DC. Her daughter Grace married William P. Phelps, M.D.. Grace, too, died of uterine cancer on Sunday, August 7, 1921, at the age of 42. In the 1920 census, Grace and her husband William Phelps resided at 51 Quincy Pl, NE, DC, as did her younger sister & her husband, Maud DeMent & Langhorn Shearer. Grace was buried on Tuesday, Aug 9, 1921, and the following day, 7 month old twin girls were taken to be baptized in a church just blocks from 51 Quincy Pl. The parents on the baptism certificate are given as” Langhorn & Maudie (DeMent) Shearer. It is known that the twins were the adopted daughters of Maud & Langhorn Shearer. Because they were baptized the day after Grace’s burial, it is believed Grace DeMent Phelps was the twins’ birth mother. Her husband William was much older and at age 60 couldn’t care for the twins (he died in 1924, age 63-64. The twins were told they were born at 51 Quincy Pl , NE, DC.
