Birth: 1844
County Sligo, Ireland
Death: Aug. 30, 1867

Bridget Deignan (commonly called, by mistake, "Dergan") was an Irish immigrant from Dun Cliffe, county Sligo, Ireland who arrived in the USA at Christmastime, around 1865. To her great misfortune she was charged with the murder of her mistress Ellen Coriell, at New Market and found guilty. She was executed on the scaffold of the Middlesex County seat at New Brunswick, New Jersey 30 August 1867. It is suspected that, because of her desperate circumstances, illness and ignorance she may have been coerced by Dr. William W. Coriell, her employer, physician and a possible accessory, to murder his wife for his convenience. Dr. Coriell was not considered as a possible suspect or accessory to the murder at the time. She was attended at her execution by Fathers Duggan and Misdziol, who tried to comfort her. She was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetary, near George St. and Commercial Avenue, at that time. It is possible her grave was transferred later to the present site of St. Peters RC Cemetary at Jersey Avenue and route 27.
