BETTENDORF -- Services for Gene L. Deere, 73, of Bettendorf, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Deere died Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996, at his home, after an brief illness.
He retired in 1982 as a set-up man in the tool design department at Caterpillar Tractor Co., Mount Joy, Iowa, where he was employed for 27 years.
He was born March 22, 1923, in Farmington, Iowa, a son of Robert L. and Edith Johnson Deere. He married Jean Frow on Dec. 31, 1944, in Davenport.
He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport, and the Caterpillar Retirees Club.
During World War II, he served with the Army-Air Corps in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and received the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four bronze battle stars and the World War II Victory Medal.
Some of his happiest times were spent at his cabin on the Cedar River, where he loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bulls. He was an avid gardener, loved feeding and watching the birds and was especially fond of his three granddaughters.
Memorials may be made to Youth for Christ.
Survivors include his wife; his son, Joe, Olathe, Kan.; his granddaughters; Heather, Allison and Lindsay and their mother, Pat Deere, Bettendorf; his brother and his sister-in-law, Bob and Mary Deere, Bettendorf; and his sister-in-law, Netha Deere, Bettendorf.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John Deere, and his parents.
