Son of John Jacob Deener Sr (1790-1867) and Tobitha Hamolen, natives of Virginia - they moved to Fayette County, Tennessee in 1836.
He received his education at the Macon Masonic College. During the Civil War, he taught school. After the war he went into partnership with Samuel E. Garther, of Williston, Fayette County, Tennessee, in the mercantile business. He married Sarah Amanda Gober on November 13, 1851 and they moved to White County, Arkansas. He was elected assessor of the county in 1883 and served in that capacity for four years. While living in Tennessee, he was a justice of the peace. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was a mason.
