Ruth D. Ball, 96, widow of Alfred J. Ball, formerly of 104 Ward Ave., Towanda, passed away Sunday evening, July 11, 2004, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, North Towanda Township. Born Jan. 23, 1908, in Merryall, Wyalusing Township, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Sarah Hendershot Decker.
On Feb. 10, 1926, she married Alfred J. Ball. Ruth was employed for many years by the St. Agnes School in Towanda. Mr. and Mrs. Ball resided in Rome for many years and in 1959 moved to Towanda to make their home. She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 2, 1988. Ruth dedicated her later years to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Shirley Ball of Towanda; a daughter, Bertina Chilson of Wysox RR 2; a daughter and son-in-law, Elsie and Albert Chilson of Towanda RR 2; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by three daughters, Doris Cudo, in 1971, Lena Vanderpool, in 1987, an Alberta Steele, in 1995; a son, Kenneth Ball; brothers Alfred Decker and Benton Decker; and a sister, Letha Kissell. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with Pastor Wesley Nichols of the Church on the Hill, Milan, officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Camptown Cemetery, Camptown. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions may be directed to the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Towanda, Pa. 18848, in Ruth D. Ball's memory.
