Leona M. Deardorff, 77, died Tuesday of Alzheimer's disease at the Willamette View Continued Care Retirement Community in Milwaukie.
She was born in Seattle, Wash., to Gertrude Pope and George Francis Winder.
She grew up in Seattle, attending Ballard High School and then the University of Washington, where she majored in education. She then taught fourth grade at Interlake School in Seattle before marrying James W. Deardorff. They moved to Boulder, Colo., in 1962. After the birth of their third child, she attended the University of Colorado, where she received a master's degree in elementary education.
In 1978, they moved to Corvallis, where she attended Linn-Benton Community College to become a medical transcriptionist at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
Leona was service-oriented, volunteering at the Corvallis Thrift Shop, Habitat for Humanity and the Social Concerns Committee of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship. Music was her major love in life: She played the piano, sang in church choirs, and enjoyed folk dancing with her husband, especially English and Scottish Country dancing. They moved to Willamette View CCRC in Milwaukie in 2007.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Ellen Smiley, Laila Deardorff and Dana Deardorff; and two grandchildren.
At her request, no services will be held. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
