Phebe Lou (Dean) Ludlow

Jonesboro – Phebe Lou (Dean) Ludlow was called home to Heaven at 6:25 pm on Friday, April 20, 2012 in her residence, surrounded by her loving family. Phebe was born in Gas City, Indiana on September 14, 1932 to the late Frank and Iva (Comer) Dean. She attended Mississinewa School. She was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1980.
She retired from Marion K-Mart in 1992. She enjoyed going to rummage sales, reading, working on crossword puzzles, and word searches. She also enjoyed watching Days of Our Lives, The 700 Club, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. She enjoyed having family get-togethers. She loved tending to the many flowers in her yard and watching the birds at her birdfeeders. She couldn't wait for spring so she could get the first batch of dandelion greens. She loved the color lavender. She was one of the strongest and most independent women you ever met. She was very hard working and a caring woman. Over the years, she helped many people out with food, clothing, and fuel. Some of her favorite sayings were "it could be worse", "be thankful for what you have", and "if there's a will, there's a way". She began working at the young age of 8 to help her family out. She did cleaning and babysitting for the Fortney Family. She looked at Rose Fortney as a mentor. In the early 1950's she worked at Wintrodes Truck Stop, the Avalon Cafeteria, Hills Department Store, and at Runyon's Grocery store into the mid 1960's. She worked at Solms Foodland, Mercker's Drugland, and at Marion General Hospital and Riverview Nursing home as a nurse's aide. She also worked at Berger Drug Store, Lil General, the V.A. Hospital, Newberry's, Foster Forbes, and Maces. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and one of the highlights of her life was getting to go to a Cubs game.
She is survived by daughters, Cindy (Richard) Lines, Donita (Lillard) Stone, Robyn (Jimmie Miller) Wheeler; sons, Roger McHenry, Joe McHenry, Bill Ludlow, and Stephen (Bobbie) Ludlow; 12 grandchildren, Bonnie (Josh) Straw, Megan (Aaron Parish) McWhirt, Chad McWhirt, Samantha (Travis Riddle) Canada, Amber McHenry, Jennifer (Sam) Morrison, Joshua Ludlow, Jessica Ludlow, Grace Ludlow, James Wheeler, Aaron Wheeler, and Katlyn Apperson; 13 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three nieces, Ann (Steve) Howard, Clarrissia (Jeff) Rowe and Frances (Tony) Hiatt; her beloved dogs, Boomer and Dudley; her cat, Sydney; and her bird.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Frank and Iva (Comer) Dean; stepfathers, Walter Julian, Guy Lloyd, Jeff Clouse, and Tony Hayse; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis (Francis) Craun; sisters, Mary Louise Dean and Lucinda Julian; step-sister, Shirley Clouse; grandson, Lenny McWhirt; and great-grandson, Caleb Gross.
Funeral Service will be at 11 am on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the funeral home with Pastor David Morris, Phebe's step grandson, presiding over the funeral. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Gas City, Indiana.
