After the war a son of theirs returned as a wounded soldier. He was the second person to die & be buried in this cemetery. It may have been their son William as he was born in 1849. His parents Peter DeWitt was born in MO. & Mary Ann Dodson was born in TN & were married Jan. 20, 1848 in Jefferson Co. MO. Peter came to Flatwoods (now called Hartshorn) in 1856 & settled a place one mile northwest of Hartshorn. They resided there until the Civil War, when they left for their old home in Jefferson Co. MO. They returned to Flatwoods at the close of the Civil War, where they resided until death. Civil War 1861-1865. His father Peter DeWitt & James Hensley built a log school house, a good sized building north of Hartshorn, which was used for many years for school and church purposes.
