PELLA — LaVerna C. Blackwood, 94, of Pella, formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Duane E. Skidmore of Reasnor United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in rural Newton.

Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name or to the Pella Comfort House.

The daughter of Lain and Rosa Anna (Weideman) De Penning, she was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Jasper County. She attended rural Jasper County schools. On Jan. 31, 1935, she married Richard Rozelle Blackwood in the Little Brown Church in Nashua and was a homemaker. She was a past member of the Mt. Zion Church in rural Newton, W.A.S.J. at Mt. Zion Church, Palo Alto Grange, Jasper County Farm Bureau and also a member of Reasnor United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlene (LaMar) DeJong of Pella; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Leona Lanphier.
