Anne Sweel De Filippo, 93, of River Plaza, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2010 at home surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 30, 1916 in McKees Rock, PA to Russian immigrants. She moved to Red Bank at a young age and worked at the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank where she met Chris DeFilippo her husband of 65 years. In 1949, she opened Chris' Deli and became the heart and soul of the establishment where Anne introduced her famous potato salad, cole slaw and macaroni salad. She continued working at the deli until her retirement in 2001, when her daughter Christine took on her mother's role.
She is predeceased by her parents, Alex and Ann Sweel; brothers, John, Bill and Al Sweel and her sister, Mary Semrow.
She leaves behind her husband, Chris DeFilippo; daugther, Christine A. Tramitz and her son, Robert DeFilippo all of River Plaza; her grandchildren, Hunter and Alexis Tramitz; several nieces and nephews and one grandniece.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.
