Death: Mar. 20, 1944

Mattie's parents Joseph and Martha Elizabeth Bates Day married in Williamsport, Pickaway, Ohio on October 28, 1860. Eight children were born in the Ross/Pickaway County, Ohio area and Mattie was the last known child born to this union.

Mattie did not write why her family packed up and moved to the Ringgold County, Iowa area, but all the children removed with their parents.

Note written by Mrs. Martha "Mattie" Bell Day Bryson and her sister Mrs. Mary "Nin" Elizabeth Day Cain circa 1930: Pa & Ma came to Iowa the fall of 1880 from Greenland, Ohio to Mt. Ayr, Iowa & spent winter with Aunt & Uncle Ben Day - In March they moved to Maloney farm, 620 acre, in 1881 and in spring of 1882 moved to Thos. Wright farm. Dad died in March there - dropsy. Geo died with Bright's disease. (Copied exact) (Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa)

Mattie refers to her Uncle Ben who is Benjamin F. Day, younger brother of Joseph. Maybe Benjamin was the reason that Joseph moved his family to the Ringgold County, Iowa area. Also Mattie writes that her father died of "dropsy," which is an abnormal accumulation of fluid, in March. Within six months after her father's death, her brother Hezekiah "John" died in September, at the age of 9 years and her brother George died a month latter at the age of 18 years.

Mattie's mother Martha married John Hutchison in December 1883 and to this union two children were born -- Edith and Adam Clark. When John Hutchison's first wife died in January 1882 and he was left with six children living in his home.

It is a family story that John went to visit his sister in Ireland and died there. This again left Mattie's family without a father. Mattie helped her mother raise her two small siblings Edith and Adam.

July 4, 1906, Mattie married William "Dolph" Randolph Bryson. Living in his home were four children from his first marriage to Pearl Mae Largent. Mattie and Dolph had four children. They lived in Kansas City, Wyandotte County in a neighborhood named Strawberry Hill.
