She was born Feb. 5, 1916, the seventh of the 11 children of Flavus Presley Day and Dora Blay West. She was raised in southern Indiana, graduated from Lynnville High School and lived most of her life in and around the Evansville area. She married Harry M. Akin of Rock Valley, Iowa on Sept. 12, 1942, at St. Mary's parish in Evansville and had four children. The family briefly lived in Dekalb, Illinois and soon after Harry's untimely death in 1959, she returned to Evansville and went to work at Deaconess Hospital where she worked in the lab for 24 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a longtime member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and an active member of the Grandview Apartments community.

She is survived by [edited for privacy], 20 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by husband, Harry M. Akin; parents Flavius and Dora (West) Day; six brothers; and three sisters.

A funeral mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Jay Davidson officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 4 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 5, 2007, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church Restoration Fund, 704 First Ave., Evansville, IN 47710.
