MODESTO, Calif. — Hettie Marie Dawson Bentley, 81, died April 29, 2011, in Modesto, Calif.
Born Dec. 17, 1929, in Newark, she was the daughter of William and Lydia Dawson. She grew up on a cotton farm and graduated from Newark High School as salutatorian and was a member of the girls' basketball team.
She married Lawrence Bentley in California. After retirement they bought a plot of land in the mountains near Coulterville, Calif., and began traveling in a recreational vehicle to see the sights. Following her husband's death, she moved to Hughson, Calif. She joined the Turlock Senior Citizens and participated as a Pink Lady at Emanuel Hospital.
Survivors include 10 children, Margie Machado of Hughson, Ray Ridlon of Jamul, Calif., Larry Ridlon and Rocky Bentley, both of Ceres, Calif., Cea Bentley of Lewisville, Texas, Lee Bentley of Jamestown and Shirley Webb, Barbara Lomonico, Beverly Bentley and Jimmy Bentley, all of Visalia, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Sears of Modesto and Margarette Babbitt of Florida; 25 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Thursday in Lakewood Memorial Park.
