Anita was the daughter of Foy Haskell and Mary Lorena (Small) Dawkins. She grew up in the Texas Panhandle in a farming and ranching family. She graduated from high school in Plainview, in 1953, and attended business school for two years.
She then entered West Texas State College (now West Texas A&M University) at Canyon, Texas where she met and married Herman Betke after he graduated in 1957. Herman was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant through R.O.T.C. and they were stationed at Fort Bliss for military school and were then transferred to Germany.
Their son, Mike, was born at Nurnburg Army Hospital in 1959 and they returned home in February, 1961 with an assignment on recruiting duty in Amarillo. Their daughter, Denise, was born at the Amarillo Air Force Base hospital in May of that year. During their life of 23 years in the U.S. Army, the family traveled and lived all over the country and the world.
The kids attended public and military schools in Virginia, Louisiana, Kansas, Colorado, Texas, and an International School in Bangkok, Thailand.
Anita saw the world through the eyes of a gifted and talented artist and saw and painted beauty wherever she was. Anita and Herman moved to Waco in 1980 following retirement from the Army.
She became gravely ill in December, 2000, with congestive heart failure and received a heart transplant at Seton Medical Center in April, 2001. She loved every extra moment of life she was blessed with as a result of the "gift of life."
Preceding Anita in death were her parents, Foy and Lorena Dawkins.
