Stephanie Colleen Dawes was born on March 28, 1975 in Willoughby, Lake Co, OH. She was the daughter of William Dawes and Joan Wagner Dawes. She attended Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington, Des Moines Co, IA. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1993 and from the University of Iowa in 1998. On Dec. 17, 1999, she married Justin Blake Binder in Burlington. Mrs. Binder and her husband moved to Virginia where she earned a M.S., Industrial and Systems Engineering, Human Factors Option, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2001.
Mrs. Binder worked as a General Engineer (Human Factors) at United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for almost eight years. Stephanie had already accomplished much in her career. She played a vital role in the Department's efforts to combat distracted driving. She was the primary author of NHTSA's overall driver distraction plan, and played a leading role in both of their Distracted Driving Summits. She even worked on the distraction issue internationally, chairing the Human Factors Working Group for the Bilateral Agreement between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the European Commission. Stephanie was recognized for her efforts with several awards and honors, including the 2009 Superior Achievement Award, which recognizes employees who have substantially contributed to agency programs through exemplary professional performance and leadership. Outside of work, she enjoyed traveling, cooking, exploring new cuisine, bicycling, snow skiing, and time with friends.
Stephanie Colleen Binder, 35, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Burlington, Des Moines Co, IA, died Saturday, February 12, 2011, of a pulmonary embolism, probably a complication of a recent and routine ankle surgery. Survivors include her husband; her mother of Burlington; one sister, Samantha Tarrence of Burlington; and one niece. She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.
The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday February 20, at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, Des Moines Co, IA, where the memorial service for Mrs. Binder was held at 3 p.m. The Rev. Trevor Davis officiated. The body has been cremated.
