Colonel Alice May Davis, United States Army, retired, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Alice was born on March 11, 1933 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Burl and Patricia Davis. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother Harold Davis. She is survived by a brother, Wayne Davis; a sister, Doris Trone; and many friends. Her early education included her graduation from Tokyo Japan American High School in 1950. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Gettysburg College in 1955 and received a Masters of Art from Columbia University in 1962. She was honored in 1965 as one of the "Outstanding Young Women in America." Following her father in the military, Colonel Davis was commissioned in the U.S. Army in September 1955 as a 2nd Lieutenant. During her military career she served principally in military intelligence assignments at ASA, NSA, DIA and OACSI as a Soviet Specialist and Russian linguist. The high point of her career was her assignment as the Senior Presidential Translator and Chief of the Washington-Moscow "Hot Line" at the Pentagon in the National Military Command Center in the Office of the Joint Chief of Staff from 1971-1975. Her last assignment was Charlottesville, VA in 1978-1980 as the Director of Technical Services as the then Foreign Science and Technology Center. She retired in Charlottesville, was an avid golfer, and also enjoyed playing tennis, hiking and birding. Colonel Davis was a resident of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, where she received and appreciated the excellent care by all the staff members in the health care center. She was a longtime contributor to animal organizations. Two of her favorites were Caring for Creatures, 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, VA 22963, and CASPCA, 3355 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Expressions of sympathy can be made by donations to either organization in honor of Colonel Davis. Colonel Davis will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
