San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) - October 17, 2007

Deceased Name: DAVIS, ALTA MAE MORROW

Alta Mae Morrow Davis, RN, (96) of Encinitas, CA, after a long struggle against death expired October 13, 2007 at her home in Encinitas with family and friends present. She truly was a member of the Greatest Generation. Alta Mae Morrow was born on a farm in rural Lyons township of Mills County, Iowa on February 20, 1911. She grew up and went to Pacific Junction School with her brothers Brown and Fred. They had a happy life with many relatives in the area. One of her mother's sisters joined the DAR in 1919 and had National #3878. Alta joined the DAR in the DeAnza Chapter in Rancho Santa Fe and was an active member for over 30 years. Alta took nurse's training at Nicholas Senn Hospital in Omaha and passed the Nebraska's nurses exam on the first try. In the meantime she met Cyril Bernard Davis, married and moved to his home town, Chicago, Ill. It was during the Depression. She waited tables for 10 cents a day! Her son, Paul Howard Davis, was born in 1935 during the darkest days of the Depression. She and Cyril saved up $300 by 1940 and bought their first home in Westmont, Ill. They had an acre of land, so when the second World War started they were able to raise chickens and have a big garden and fruit trees to supplement their diet. Alta took a bookkeeping job at Montgomery Wards in La Grange, Illinois. A break in her life came when she learned of a job as DuPage County Nurse. Her father had passed away and left them a 1935 Pontiac, which she used to go around the county and visit sick people. She later became the Westmont School Nurse, dietitian, and cafeteria supervisor, a position she held for 18 years until she retired. Paul had graduated from Drake University and was married, so Alta and Cyril bought a camper and traveled to all 50 states and finally decided to retire in San Diego to be near family. She returned to Pacific Junction reunions as long as their health permitted. In 1995, Cyril passed away after 60 wonderful years together. Life was not the same for Alta after that. In 1990, just after her 90th birthday, she gave up driving, her health declined, and she was bedridden. She is survived by her son, Paul Howard Davis, and daughter-in-law, Rosella Margaret Davis. Also, her two granddaughters, Jennifer Anne Jonah and Sarah Jane Higganbotham, their husbands, Tracy Jonah and Gary Higganbotham, her three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Jonah, Kristen Jonah, and Megan Higgenbotham. A Viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Encinitas Mortuary, 340 Melrose, Encinitas, CA. A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 18, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at the El Camino Cemetery, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Alta Mae Morrow Scholarship Fund, Glenwood Senior High School, 400 Sivers Road, Glenwood, Iowa 51534 (Attn. Bill Magnason) would be greatly appreciated.
