August 24, 1850 - The Democrat - Mrs. L.H. Mayne, wife of the late publisher of The Reporter who also was an Emmetsburg postmaster, died this morning after an illness at the state hospital at Independence. The body will be taken to the Foy Funeral home and funeral services were tenitavely set for Saturday afternoon here.
Mrs. Mayne, whose husband was a prominent resident, leaves two step-daughters, Mrs. Winifred Van Etten of Mount Vernon, Ia., and Mrs. Isabel Gray of Olivia, Minn. Mrs. Van Etten, who has been a member of the facility of Cornell college at Mount Vernon, gained wide recognition a number of years ago as an author when her novel, "I Am The Fox" won a $10,000 prize from the Atlantic Monthly. She will be unable to attend the funeral as she is now on a trip to Europe.
Two step-children preceded Mrs. Mayne in death, Miss Hortense Mayne and Clifford Mayne. The latter's widow and family are in Washington D.C., and it was not known if they would be able to come here for the funeral.
Mrs. Mayne, the former Miss Mabel Davis, was a high school teacher here when she married Mr. Mayne, whose first wife died many years ago. Mr. Mayne died about 15 years ago.
