Alexander W. Davis CHARLESTON - Alexander (Aleco) William Davis, age 91 passed away at Lexington Hospital Friday, March 4, 2011.

He was born in Charleston, SC on Sunday, May 9,1920, to the late William Alexander Davis and Ada Kolb Davis.

He is preceded by two sisters Marie Davis Jones and Georgia Davis and one brother Louis William Davis. He was married to his childhood sweetheart Dessie Manning Davis for almost 72 years.

He loved to tell the story of how he told their cook on the day he first saw her that he was going to marry her, He was 11 and she was 9. They waited a few years before eloping at ages 18 and 16.

He will be truly missed by his long time partner. He worked at the infamous cigar factory in Charleston in his younger days and loved to play baseball as soon as he got off from work. Later he joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Goldsboro, NC where he put together baseball teams with fellow soldiers. He worked at the Ammunition Depot for 38 years retiring in 1976. He was an avid fisherman having his picture in the local paper on several occasions with his special catch.

He learned to make shrimp cast nets and sold over 80. He also loved to play Rook with his children and grandchildren. He was a deacon and member of the First Christian Church. They had several fish fry socials at his house.

He was a loving gentle soul that was loved by all. He will be especially missed by his family.

Survivors are his wife Dessie Manning Davis, a son William (Bill) A. Davis; a son James (Jim) E. Davis and wife Holly; a daughter Cynthia (Cyndi) Davis McDaniel and husband Ron; a daughter Jeanne Davis Xanthacos; ten grandchildren Brian Davis, Keith McDaniel, Amy Calkins and her husband Craig; Chelsea Mikel and her husband Danny, Damon Pye and his wife Amanda, Alisha Murphy and her husband Sean, Jeremy Morrow and his wife Lauren, Justin McDaniel, Tiffany Davis and Ashley Davis; five great-grandchildren, Brooke Calkins, Holden Mikel, Kierstern Calkins, Hudson Pye and Madelyn Pye.

The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander W. Davis are invited to attend his funeral service at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, Monday, March 7, 2011, at 12:00 PM. Burial will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy., this Sunday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

The family requests donations be made to First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 1293 Orange Grove Rd., Charleston, SC 29407.
