Bess Davis age 86 of Colorado Springs, Colorado formerly of Williamsburg, passed away Friday January 10, 2014 at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Colorado Spring, Colorado.

Bess was born tenth of 13 children on March 5, 1927 in the small coal-mining town of Stearns, KY where her father worked in the mines and ran Wright's Dairy. Bess enjoyed being part of a large family but also treasured those fleeting moments she had with her mother in the mornings by the warm stove as her mother cooked breakfast. She enjoyed spending time with her father, occasionally helping him deliver milk and doing the books for the dairy.

She loved her brothers and sisters dearly and enjoyed being mother hen to the three younger siblings, keeping them safe and in line. Bess was an excellent seamstress from a very young age. Since the family worked the farm, there was a never- ending supply of material from the feed sacks to form her creations. She sewed all her own clothes as well as clothes for her younger sisters.

Bess loved school and was valedictorian of her high school class. She helped manage the dairy's ice cream business and introduced "chocolate chip" flavored ice cream to the Stearns community. Although her father tried to keep her at home as long as he could, she began attending Cumberland College on a scholarship. She studied home economics and came home each weekend as her father insisted. One year, during class registration at Cumberland, she met Jack Davis who asked her what classes she was enrolled in. Boldly, he told her he would sign up for the same courses. The two were married on August 19, 1950.

They raised two children; Alan and Denise and enjoyed 52 years of marriage while Jack completed a career with Western Electric. Bess and Jack lived in many states including: Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, California, New Jersey, New York and Maryland. They finally retired in Aiken South Carolina in 1985 where they could play golf almost all year round.

During all these moves Bess always served the church where she lived. She served on hospitality and floral committees and was always willing to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. She attended many women's prayer and bible study groups and loved reading God's word.

One of her biggest accomplishments was raising her children. Bess was a stay at home mom and always available for her children. There were cookies and a listening ear available each day when they got home from school. She encouraged them with her positive spirit to be the best they could be and to love the Lord.

Bess was an excellent cook and fantastic baker. These skills were surely attracted Jack. Bess made extra money in their first years of marriage by baking and selling cakes to local residents. Her 3- layer chocolate was always in demand.

Bess also enjoyed flowers and knew the name of every variety. She enjoyed growing them as well as arranging them. Bess would often make arrangements for the ladies groups that she was a part of.

Bess was an avid golfer. She learned to play in her 40's as it was Jack's favorite pass-time. She played with a ladies golf group twice a week, and she and Jack spent many days together out on the course.

When Jack passed on in 2003 Bess moved to Colorado to live with Denise and her favorite son-in-law, Jeff. Bess enjoyed outings with Denise and laughing at Jeff's jokes. She adored her three grandchildren, Tyler, Katie and Steven and attended their school and sports activities. She became "Gram" to all of their friends and enjoyed the busyness of a house with three teenagers.

While in Colorado Springs Bess attended ladies bible studies and enjoyed the friendship of many ladies at Vista Grande Baptist Church. She loved her Sunday School Class, named "Saints Alive". Her class supported her through several hospital stays and illnesses.

Bess was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She loved her husband, children and extended family with a passion. A gentle and sweet woman, she invested heavily in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was always ready with the right words of encouragement at just the right time. Mrs. Davis was also dedicated to her Lord and her church family. Seeking to model her life after Christ, she set a wonderful example of love and service.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Davis and a son Alan Davis.

She is survived by her daughter and son in law Denise and Jeff Carson of Colorado Springs, three grandchildren, Tyler Carson of Webster, New York, Katie Burghardt and her husband Jake of Still Water, Oklahoma, Steve Carson and his fianc Becky Fischietto of Littleton, Colorado, three older sisters, a younger brother, a younger sister, many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be held 11:30am Wednesday January 22, 2014 at the Ellison Funeral Home Chapel in Williamsburg, KY with Rev. Vernon Jones officiating following the service she will be laid to rest in the Highland Cemetery in Williamsburg, KY.
