His birth parents were George F. Snyder and Sophia Denike Snyder.
In 1915 he was adopted by Edwin Forrest Davis (84468299) and Cora Gould Davis (163908240) of Climax, Michigan and his name was changed.
On August 3, 1934 as Ellis Oakes Davis, he married Elma Catherine Hannan at Climax, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
They were the parents of three children.

Retired Army Col. Ellis O. Davis Sr., age 92, of Battle Creek died Sunday, October 15, 2000, in Alterra Clare Bridge Cottage. He was born August 23, 1908, in Boon to George F. Snyder and Sophia Denike Snyder. He was adopted in 1915 by Edwin Forrest Davis and Cora Gould Davis of Climax and his name was changed. In 1925, he graduated from Climax High School. He attended Western Michigan University and in 1927 joined the United States Army Air Corps. His military career began in July 1930 as a cadet at the United States Military Academy, where he became a second lieutenant upon graduating in 1934. He served in the 12th Calvary at Fort Brown, Texas; transferred to the Corps of Engineers in 1936 and earned a master's degree in civil engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1940. He commanded combat engineer groups during World War n in the 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division and the Eighth Army in the Korean War. He served at the Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Virginia and the Armor Board at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He retired as colonel on June 30, 1961, having received two Bronze Star medals. After retiring from the Army, he worked as a research associate at Ohio State University until 1975. He was a member of the Society of American Military Engineers Association and Association of Graduates of West Point.

On August 3, 1934, he married Elma C. Hannan. She died July 6, 1991. Surviving are two sons of Battle Creek and Chicago; one daughter of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Keith Wickham and Frederick and Vernon Snyder. Arrangements were by the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. Services were held at the Old Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Burial was at the Post Cemetery, West Point, New York. The family suggested memorial to the Alzheimer's Association.
