March 20, 1924 ~ September 26, 2010
Josephine Ellen Cummings lived a full life. She was born on March 20th, 1924, to Harry and Josephine Davies.
Raised in Kernville, California with her two younger sisters, Pat and Dorothy, she had many adventures, which she recalled with great fondness. Some of her favorite memories included watching episodes of Hopalong Cassidy being filmed in her small town, her father's work on the power plant on the Kern River, and her family trips in their 1939 Dodge to the ocean for clam bakes and campouts.
After graduating from high school during World War II, Jo Ellen attended junior college and studied nursing. To support herself, she worked for Bank of America as a comptometer operator. In the evenings, she and her sister often went to the Minter Field Air Force Training Station to attend USO dances—Jo was quite a Jitter-bugger! It was there she met her future husband, Veigh Cummings.
Jo Ellen had six children, each of which was special to her in their own unique way. She also had 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren (with another one on the way), and one great-great grandchild.
Besides loving and raising her family, Jo Ellen was active with First Baptist Church in Salt Lake City. She also helped Veigh get his many businesses off the ground and running and successfully. She worked for Standard Oil Company, Castleton's, Lippincott, and several local churches and was president Wool Growers Salt Lake Women's Auxilary.
Jo Ellen had an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Though we are sad to see her leave this world, we are thrilled that she is whole and at peace with Him.
Jo Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Josephine; son, Clair; daughter, Diane; and her sisters, Pat and Dorothy.
She is survived by her sons, Bruce, Randy, Phil and Chris, their wives, children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 30, 2010, 12 noon at the First Baptist Church, 777 S. 1300 E. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
