Josephine Marie "Tootsie" Claus, 101, a longtime Duluth Heights resident, passed away Feb. 2, 2011, in the Benedictine Health Center, Duluth.
Tootsie was born May 3, 1909, in Kent, Minn., to Norwegian immigrants, Anton and Emma (Edwardsen) Davidson, the youngest of seven children.
On March 4, 1929, she married Walter Claus in Duluth. They were married for 71 years, until his death in 2001.
Tootsie retired from St. Luke's hospital and was a former member of the Hermantown Chapter of AARP, Jackson Club and the Duluth Heights Community Club.
Tootsie will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a great cook and for her wonderful backrubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter; brothers, David, Arnold and George Davidson; sisters Warda Anderson, Nettie Neil and Mabel Harris; and many nieces and nephews.
Tootsie is survived by her sons, Dale (Mary) Claus of Hermantown and James (Susan) Claus of Duluth; grandchildren Kevin (Cindy) Claus of Hermantown, Karen (David) Tracey of Ft. Meyers, Fla, Lori (David) Nelson of Duluth, Scott Claus of Andover, Minn., Tracey (Robin) Brunner of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Timothy Claus of Duluth; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Benedictine Health Center for the excellent care she received for the past nine and one half years, and a special thank you to the staff of "Safe Harbor" for their loving and compassionate care.
She will be greatly missed by the many friends she has made during her stay at the Benedictine Health Center.
VISITATION: 2 until the 3 p.m. funeral service Saturday, Feb. 5, in Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth. Interment at Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, (218) 727-3555.
