Berniece M. Davidson Smith, 91, of Pittsburg, formerly of Altamont, died at 11:00 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor.

She was born January 30, 1922, in rural Altamont, Kansas, to Benjamin F. and Clara L. (Shepard) Davidson. She grew up in rural Altamont and was a 1941 graduate of Labette County Community High School.

In early years, she was employed by the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and, following the war, was a homemaker.

n 1973, she moved to Ottawa, Kansas, where she worked as a nurse at Ransom Memorial Hospital for 25 years and was in charge of the Cardio Pulmonary Department when she retired.

She attended twenty-two consecutive national nursing conventions and also served as State president three terms. She served eight years as legislative chairperson and was appointed by Kansas Governor John Carlin to serve on the Kansas Board of Nursing and was later reappointed by Kansas Governor Mike Hayden to serve another four-year term.

Following retirement, she served as a Silver Haired delegate in the 7th district and after moving to Topeka, in the 4th district.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altamont.

She enjoyed bingo, canasta, dominoes and working puzzles.

She and Roy F. Smith were married June 7, 1941, in Mound Valley, Kansas. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include: Two Sons – Steven Smith Pittsburg, KS Kerry Smith Tonganoxie, KS One Daughter – Darla Kristin Parsons, KS Three Grandchildren – Matthew Smith, Michael Smith and Shanna Kristin Three Great-Grandchildren – Ariel Smith, Kayla Smith and Konner Smith.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
