| Birth: | Apr. 27, 1940 Harlingen Cameron County Texas, USA | | Death: | Nov. 1, 2011 Texas, USA | HARLINGEN, TX. - Donald Edward Daughtrey passed from this life into the waiting arms of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, November 1, 2011.
Donald was born on April 27, 1940 in Harlingen, Texas, to William Earl and Eva Daughtrey.
At the early age of one month, Donald joined the Crib Babies Class in the First Baptist Church of San Benito. His father, mother and brother Bill, who was four, were already members. Donald spent the rest of his childhood in San Benito where he gave his heart to the Lord and was water-baptized at the age of nine.
His passions during this time were music and hunting. He quickly became an expert hunter, providing his family with numerous and various types of wild meat during his secondary school years. At the same time, he sang in the high school choir and played the piano and organ for the church. After graduation, Donald attended college, receiving a degree in teaching from Texas A&I Kingsville and numerous hours in sacred music. Donald was also the organist at Calvary Baptist Church in Harlingen from 2002 until he was no longer able to do it.
After college, Donald tried his talent in various jobs, including taxidermist, insurance, restaurant manager, and cook and deck hand on an Alaskan crab boat, but eventually settled on teaching. His two earliest teaching positions were at San Benito high and a one-room teaching position at Larson Bay on Kodiak Island, Alaska. During his two years there, Donald kept the whole village well fed with his hunting and fishing talents. In his later years it was always a treat to hear him tell of all his adventures in the wild. Donald came back to the Valley where he spent the last 31 years of his teaching career in secondary education retiring in 2000.
During this time, Donald also enjoyed several past hobbies. He was an expert marksman with shotguns, pistols and rifles. He also reloaded his own ammunition, refinished furniture, made and sold knives and enjoyed photography. He was always generous, joyful and full of life, as all who knew him will attest.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Eva Daughtrey, his previous wife Linda Daughtrey, and brother, William A. Daughtrey.
