Hieronymus M. Daszkowski was born September 27, 1861, in Daski, Poland. He grew up there and at the age of twenty-one years came to America, settling first in Chicago, Ill., and working five years at various points. About this time he heard the call of priesthood. he spent some time at Pillsbury Academy in Owatonna and studied much at night classes and whenever hours found time between working hours. It can truly be said that Father Daszkowski was a self-educated man. Later he studied at Orchard Grove Seminary in Michigan and comleted his theological course at St. Paul's Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., shere he was ordained in June 1901.
He celebrated his first Mass in St. Stanislaus Church in Winona. His first parish was at Minnesota Lake, where he remained for two and a half years, going then to St. Hyacinth's Parish in Owatonna and remaining there for four years. He served the parish at East Chain from 1907 to 1916 and then returned to Minnesota Lake where he remained for seventeen years. Due to failing health he retired in 1933 and came to Wells to make his home.
Father Daszkowski had two brothers and five sisters of whom one sister is believed to be still living in Poland. A niece, Leona Gunther of LeMars, Ia., is his nearest relative in this country. There are a number of cousins remaining.
Father Daszkowski was beloved by all who knew him. His kindness was known to many and his friendly disposition brought happiness to young and old alike.
